Four people have drowned in Luwanjazi River at Chiseng’eze in Mzimba District.
The incident happened on July 10, 2021.
According Sub Inspector, John Nyirongo, The four: Dyness Kumwenda , 13, Rose Kumwenda , 16, Dyna Mzale , 36, and one-year-old Brenda Mkandawire went to fish at Luwanjazi river together with a fifth person identified as Mphangela Mkandawire.
They were using a poisonous herb known as Mtengeza for fishing. As fish started floating , Kumwenda went into the water to catch the fish but unfortunately she drowned, Rose thought of rescuing her and in process she also drowned.
Mkandawire who had her daughter on her back thought of rescuing her daughter in-laws, those already in water but she drowned as well with her one-year-old baby.
Police say Mphangela Mkandawire rushed to the village to inform people about the incident.
Some community members rushed to the scene but found all
bodies floating on water.
Mzimba Police officers accompanied by Medical officers, went to the scene. Postmortem results showed that the death was due to suffocation secondary to drowning.
The deceased hailed from Kanazamba Village,Traditional Authority Chindi in Mzimba.
