The President’s Press Secretary Brian Banda said the President is expected to weigh on the issue of Schools reopening on Sunday during his weekly briefing.
“We understand that people are eagerly waiting to hear about the schools but that should not be a problem. The President will make his decision after proper consultations with [members of] the Presidential Taskforce on Covid, [and officials from the] Ministry of Health and Ministry of Education,” Banda said.
Meanwhile, Teachers Union of Malawi (Tum) President Willie Malimba has said safety should be the overriding aim of any decision taken on the issue of school reopening.
“We, as Tum, are also eagerly waiting to hear what the President will say on the issue of school re-opening.
“But, whatever he plans to do, let it be known that we, as teachers, want risk allowances. Above all, let the school environment be safe for each and every learner before opening the schools,” Malimba said.
Chakwera, in early January, declared a State of National Emergency due to escalating cases of Covid.
He, also ordered that schools be closed for three weeks pending a review of circumstances.
The given three weeks will expire this week on Monday.
